04/26/2015 (Nepal) – A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck east of Kathmandu on Sunday, 27 April, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was registered at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles) and about 65km (40 miles) east of the capital. The earthquake struck at 1254hrs (0709hrs UTC). According to emerging media reports, the quake caused an avalanche on Mount Makalu. At this point, there is no information of casualties.

Since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal at 1156hrs (0611UTC) on Saturday, 25 April, the USGS reported dozens of other quakes of moderate intensity. The bulk of those quakes have occurred in the area east of Kathmandu. Coupled with severe damage to the local infrastructure and harsh weather conditions in mountainous areas, these aftershocks are hampering rescue operations. According to the latest media updates, more than 1,900 people have died, although casualty figures are likely to increase. The Nepali government has declared a state of emergency, and appealed for humanitarian assistance from the international community.

It should be noted that the Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu resumed services on Sunday, although aftershocks may prompt the temporary closure of the facility in the near future. Those currently in Nepal should fully adhere to all government directives under the state of emergency. In the event shelters or other safe locations are at full capacity, individuals should consider seeking refuge at embassy compounds and related buildings, as many have offered to extend assistance. Clients in Nepal should be aware that aftershocks causing additional material damage may occur in the immediate-to short-term.
