03/18/2015 (Tunisia) – The Interior Ministry announced that gunmen dressed in military uniforms attacked the National Assembly building on Wednesday, 18 March. There have been reports of gunfire and two explosions, but the latter has not been confirmed.

Parliamentarians, bureaucratic staff and other public officials were escorted from the building and the security forces are on site.

At least seven tourists were killed, but their identities have not been publicly disclosed. There is an unconfirmed source claiming that the foreigners are from Italy, Spain and France. One Tunisian has been confirmed as a fatality. Other reports stated that there may be as many as 30 tourists trapped in the nearby Bardo Museum and being kept as hostages by at least two of the gunmen. There are numerous social media reports with photos of the tourists, who appear physically in good condition. At least 160 tourists were able to flee the scene or rescued through the back entrance of the museum.

At this juncture, the identities of the attackers and any terrorist affiliations are unclear.

Given the current situation developing in the Raoued area of Tunis, travellers in the immediate vicinity are advised to vacate the area and heed the advice of the local security forces. There may be delays to local public transportation due to ongoing security operations in the immediate areas.

Remain in secure accommodations and worksites until the situation has been assessed as safe enough to travel. Contact company health, safety and security departments for a well-being check and review contingency measures in the event local security prevents routine travel and business continuity.
