Government Warning Issued for Jordan
Severity: 3 (Moderate)
Source: U.S. Department of State
02/04/2015 (Jordan) – In the wake of news reports of the brutal killing of Jordanian pilot Moath al-Kasasbeh at the hands of ISIL, the U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to expect increased police and security presence throughout Jordan. Several gatherings, including one to welcome the return of King Abdullah II at Queen Alia International Airport today, are expected. While reports indicate that these gatherings are intended to be peaceful, they tend to block or obstruct major highways outside of cities, particularly the Airport Road/Desert Highway. In anticipation of the Kings return, the Airport Road is expected to be extremely congested or close entirely this afternoon. Gatherings to honor al-Kasasbeh are likely to continue within cities as well.
U.S. citizens should avoid areas where gatherings or demonstrations are ongoing. Due to their nature, a peaceful gathering may suddenly turn confrontational or escalate into violence. The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor local reaction, and will advise further as conditions warrant.
