Severity: 3 (Moderate)

02/04/2015 (Thailand) – Local media reports on Wednesday, 4 February, stated that the embassies of both the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) had updated their travel advisories for Thailand in the wake of the two low-level bomb explosions at the Siam Paragon shopping centre in Bangkok on 1 February. The US advisory stresses that while the security situation in the country has been generally peaceful over the last six months, the bombing serves as an indication that security incidents can occur with little to no warning. The UK government has also advised its nationals that bomb and grenade attacks in the country had been indiscriminate and could target places visited by expatriates and foreign travellers.
Security has been stepped up at train stations, bus terminals and commercial establishments in Bangkok since Sunday’s incident, with police launching an investigation into the blasts. According to a statement by Thai Police on Tuesday, 3 February, there were indications that the latest bomb explosions were linked to a deadly explosion, which killed two men at Min Buri district in Bangkok, at the height of anti-government protests in March 2014. Reportedly, remnants of the explosives found at the Siam blast site were similar to those found in Min Buri. Authorities have also reportedly identified two men suspected to be behind the blast, although further details were not released.
Clients and travellers in Thailand, notably in Bangkok, should stay abreast of the latest related developments that can have an impact on their safety, travel and business continuity. They should also anticipate potential disruptions associated with possible heightened security measures in light of the blasts. Any suspicious object, package, person or activity should immediately be reported to relevant authorities.
