Category: Conflict

Severity: 3 (Moderate)

Source: U.S. Department of State

09/30/2014 (Hong Kong) – Demonstrations continue. Areas that have seen large crowds gather include Central, Admiralty, Wanchai, and Causeway Bay on Hong Kong island and in Mongkok in Kowloon. Many businesses in these areas have closed and public transportation has been disrupted. Travel to, from and within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region remains safe but disrupted in the aforementioned areas.

The U.S. Consulate General is closed Oct. 1 and 2 for the National Day and Chung Yeung Festival holidays, respectively, and will resume normal operations on Friday, Oct. 3.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational. You should exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Pay close attention to developments through local media and plan alternate routes should you find your original plans affected.
