Severity: 2 (Low)

09/12/2014 (France) – Media reports issued on Thursday, 11 September, indicate that French authorities have arrested an alleged radical Islamist recruiter on Wednesday, 10 September. The suspect, Mourad Fares, was apprehended as he was travelling from Turkey to France. He was arrested at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG).
Fares has allegedly operated with Sunni extremist fighters in Syria since July 2013. He reportedly linked up with militants of the Islamic State (IS). At this point there are divergent reports concerning his arrival in France. His relatives claim that he voluntarily travelled from Turkey while other reports indicate he had previously been arrested by Turkish authorities.
Tensions have been running high in France amid fears that radicalised militants associated with Syria-based networks may conduct terrorist attacks in the country. In early September information emerged concerning Mehdi Nemmouche’s alleged plans to conduct attacks in France. Nemmouche had previously fought alongside IS militants in Syria. He staged the 30 May attacks at the Jewish Museum in Brussels in which four people died. He is now detained in Belgium.
At this juncture, there is no direct information of an imminent terrorist threat in France. However, authorities are expected to continue to conduct counter-terrorist operations in the foreseeable future and harden the policies in regard to militants travelling to Syria. Clients in France should maintain a good sense of awareness at all times and promptly report any suspicious activity to local security forces.
