09/10/2014 (Italy) – Italian health officials have placed a Nigerian resident under quarantine at a hospital on Tuesday, 9 September, in the eastern town of Ancona, in the Marche Region, after displaying symptoms similar to those of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). The female patient reportedly checked into a hospital in the town of Civitanova Marche, located 40km (25 miles) south of Ancona, with a high fever and vomiting. Medical authorities in Ancona have indicated that while not ruling out EVD, the patient was believed to be suffereing from malaria. A blood sample from the patient, who recently returned from a trip to Nigeria, has been sent to Spallanzani Institute for Infectious Diseases in Rome for tests to ascertain whether she is infected with EVD. Results are expected by Wednesday.

The female patient has been identified as a resident of Civitanova Marche who returned from Nigeria six days prior to her hospitalisation. It is unclear where she travelled to in Nigeria, where health authorities have registered 15 confirmed EVD cases in Lagos and four in Port Harcourt. Officials in Ancona have indicated that should the patient test positive for EVD, the risk of further infection remains low as the Nigerian had had limited physical contact upon returning to Italy. As such, those in Italy are advised that the case does not pose an increased risk of exposure to EVD at this juncture. Remain apprised of related developments.
