08/01/2014 (Romania) – An international media outlet on Thursday, 31 July, indicated that Romanian authorities had warned of an increasing number of hepatitis cases. According to the National Infectious Disease Institute, some 150 new cases have been recorded across the country since the start of the year. The health agency said that it had begun coordinating with local officials to curb the spread of the disease.

Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver and is spread through five main hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, D and E. Hepatitis A and E are known to be caused by the ingestion of contaminated food and/or water, whilst Hepatitis B, C and D comes from contact with infected body fluids. In Romania, more than 660 people with hepatitis B and C were reported to have undergone treatment in 2013. According to the National Infectious Disease Institute, the rise of hepatitis cases in Romania can be attributed to poor personal hygiene, disregard for food cleanliness and lack of vaccination.

The infection is rarely fatal, but it can cause debilitating symptoms. The symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can include fever, malaise, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark-colour urine and jaundice.

Hepatitis immunisations are the most efficient preventive measures. In addition, improved sanitation and adequate supplies of safe-drinking water and proper disposal of sewage within communities, combined with personal hygiene practices, such as regular hand-washing, can reduce the risk of infection. Personnel operating in Romania should ensure they are vaccinated against the disease. Clients should refrain from drinking tap water and consuming food from street vendors.
