07/29/2014 (Nigeria) – Local health officials indicated on Monday, 28 July, that at least six people had died and another 27 had been hospitalised after contracting cholera in the Bali Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State over the past week. The latest outbreak is reportedly concentrated in the Bali A and Bali B wards of the LGA.

Poor sanitation and inadequate access to clean drinking water have fuelled a number of cholera outbreaks across Nigeria over the past decade. One the country’s worst cholera outbreaks was recorded in 2010, when more than 1,700 people died of the disease according to the World Health Organisations. Smaller outbreaks are reported annually and in 2013, health officials registered more than 2,700 infections and 124 fatalities across Nigeria, notably in Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kano states.

Cholera is an intestinal bacterial infection transmitted by the intake of water or food contaminated with the cholera bacterium. Outbreaks are usually connected to faecal contamination of water supplies and/or street vended food products. Acute cases will exhibit symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration. More serious infections can lead to circulatory malfunction and systemic shock. To reduce the risk of contraction, travellers should avoid areas with documented cholera outbreaks. Personnel should practice good food hygiene such as drinking only bottled, boiled or chemically-treated water and eating food that has been thoroughly cooked.
