07/12/2014 (Singapore) – Media reports on Friday, 11 July, indicated that the number of dengue cases in Singapore had reached more than 10,100 since the start of the year. According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the neighbourhood of Choa Chu Kang registered the highest number of cases between 6 and 10 July. In addition, the neighbourhoods of Hougang, Serangoon, Pasir Ris and Yishun continue to be hotspots for the mosquito-borne disease.

Dengue is an endemic disease in Singapore given the country’s highly tropical climate. The government has identified 28 areas across the island at risk of dengue infection and has launched various campaigns, including residential inspections and drainage clean-up operations, to battle the disease. However, authorities have also warned the number of infection is still likely to increase through October due to increasing temperatures which shorten the breeding and maturation cycles of mosquito-carriers, as well as the incubation periods for the dengue virus.

There is currently no vaccine for the disease, and prevention of mosquito bites is the best method to minimize the risk of contraction. Personnel can prevent mosquito bites by wearing long-sleeved clothing and trousers to cover the skin. The application of an insect repellent with DEET is highly recommended. Other control measures include installing screens, and to undertake insecticide fogging of premises. Any personnel showing signs of dengue are advised to immediately seek medical consultation.
