02/11/2014 (Mexico) – Media reports on Monday, 10 February, that an elderly Canadian couple were killed in a suspected home invasion in the Pacific state of Jalisco over the weekend. According to press accounts, the victims were discovered dead by their gardener at their residence in the town of Ajijic, a popular destination for foreign retirees, on Sunday morning. Most valuables in the house and two vehicles were also found missing. Chapala Police Chief Ernesto Robles on Monday stated that a local robbery gang was likely behind the incident.

The risk rating for Mexico is currently MODERATE, with a HIGH risk rating for criminal activity. Residential break-ins and armed robberies are common across Mexico. Criminal elements typically target homes belonging to affluent individuals regardless of nationality, and will not hesitate to resort to violence if met with resistance.

Those in Mexico are advised to adopt strict security measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras, high walls and window grills, to mitigate robberies or criminal intrusions into offices and residences. Travellers should stay abreast of local security developments, maintain a low profile and remain vigilantly aware of their surroundings. It is also recommended to use reliable but modest vehicles when travelling to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
