02/07/2014 (Mexico) – Media reports indicated that the dismembered bodies of four people were found in the Pacific state of Michoacan on Thursday, 6 February. The remains were reportedly found in various parts of the town of Zacapu, including a street near a church. In addition, a note warning those who support the Knights Templar was found with the bodies. According to the state officials, the remains of two people were also discovered in the town of Tancitaro that same day. Further details, however, remain limited.
The risk rating for Mexico is currently MODERATE, with a HIGH risk rating for criminal activity. It remains unclear if the victims were indeed members of the Knights Templar. Authorities have also yet to determine if rival groups were behind the killings or local vigilante groups. Nonetheless, it should be noted that Michoacan has been the site of a bloody turf war between the notorious Knights Templar and Jalisco New Generation drug cartel. Since last year, the state has also seen the emergence of vigilante groups that aim to eliminate the presence of narco-criminals.
Additional security forces have been deployed to Michoacan since the start of the year to restore order. However, drug-related incidents continue to be reported on a near-weekly basis, raising concerns over the effectiveness of ongoing security efforts in the state. Those in or intending to travel to Michoacan should stay abreast of the latest related developments and minimise travel to areas associated with high crime rates and vigilante or drug-trafficking activity. Travel to the state should be subjected to comprehensive security measures due to the prevailing threat of drug-related violence and informal armed groups. Personnel are also advised to heed instructions from security personnel, particularly at checkpoints, to avoid any potentially dangerous confrontations.
