The health ministry launched an anti-cholera campaign ahead of next week’s home game and World Cup qualifier against Mexico’s national football team, media reported on October 9th. On October 7th, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) expanded its epidemiological alert against cholera to include Mexico, and hundreds of Mexican fans are expected to travel to Costa Rica for the qualifier match. Hotel workers were asked to report all cases of guests with symptoms of the disease, and entry points such as ports, borders, and airports are being closely monitored. The last reported cases of cholera in Costa Rica occurred in 1997.
