October 1, 2013. Maduro expels three US diplomats from Venezuela

SOURCE: Kroll

President Nicolas Maduro announced in a televised speech on September 30th the expulsion of three US diplomats, according to media reports on October 1st. The highest ranking US diplomat in Venezuela, or charge d’affaires, and two others were accused of conspiring with opposition parties to promote and finance “acts of sabotage” against Venezuela, including plotting electrical system failures and the destabilization of Venezuela’s economy and government. Maduro claimed his government had followed them for months and accrued ample evidence to back his charges. He gave the diplomats 48 hours to leave the country. The US government rejected Maduro’s allegations, insisting that any ties to opposition figures were part of “normal diplomatic engagements.”

The US has not had an ambassador in Caracas since 2010 when Chavez refused to accept Washington’s newest appointment on grounds that the ambassador had made comments disrespectful toward Venezuela.
